Armstrong, Mitchell & Armstrong, Whitworth - Low Walker Photos
The above photo shows the Low Walker yard in October 1927 with VARAND ready for launching and BEAVERBRAE in an advanced stage of build. The layout of the yard shows the berths to be constrained in length by the river at one end and fabrication sheds at the other. BEAVERBRAE was 502ft long and VARAND was 4102ft long. Beyond the sheds is White Street, built above the level of the yard, with a high retaining wall preventing further expansion of the yard. The main offices for the yard are on the far side of White Street with the railway behind them. Photo credit: Britain From Above. The above map shows the yard in about 1930, note the Slips or Slipways jutting out into the river. The above aerial view (dated 2018 & copyright of Google) shows the location of the yard still identifiable by the slipways jutting into the river. The location of the Armstrong Whitworth offices is shown even though by 2018 they had been demolished. The Slipways can be seen in the above image, copyright of Google The Slipways can be seen in the above image, copyright of Google The Armstrong Whitworth offices on White Street.
