History of Armstrong's Willington Quay Yard

The Willington Quay yard was first used by Messrs Coutts, Parkinson & Co from 1850 to 1854 and then by Palmers Bros & Co in 1860 through to 1866 and by Palmers' Shipbuilding & Iron Co Ltd from 1881 to 1900. JT Eltringham & Co Ltd moved into the yard in 1914 and built iron ships and marine engines through to 1922 when the yard closed during the severe recession. In 1928 the yard was purchased by Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd to build a few tramp ships, before the yard was finally closed in 1933. The yard was sold to National Shipbuilders Security in 1935 and was dismantled in the same year.
