Shipbuilder: WP Huntley, Hebburn Quay - History

George Huntley Snr was a shipbuilder at Heworth Shore & Felling Shore (see separate section). His son George Huntley Jnr was born at Heworth in 1817 and in the 1881 census was residing at Monkton on the outskirts of Jarrow. George Huntley Jnr's son was William Patterson Huntley and described in the 1881 census as a "Grocers' Joiner".
From 1885 William Patterson Huntley is described as a shiprepairer at Hebburn Quay and the Ordinance Survey map of 1895 shows a shipbuilding yard and a slipway(s).
By the time of the 1901 census WP Huntley is described as an iron shipbuilder and his daughter Dorothy is a shipyard tracer.
In 1918 the shipyard and slipway was purchased by John Crass of Newcastle to form part of the ill-fated Newcastle Shipbuilding Company. There were plans for 3 berths on the Huntley site and 7 larger berths on adjoining land further down river. The Newcastle Shipbuilding Co failed in 1921.
