In 1865 John Softley and John Readhead, General Manager & Engineering Manager respectively for Marshalls at Willington Quay set up in partnership at Pilot Street, South Shields. The partnership was dissolved in 1872 and the parties went their separate ways. John Softley coninued at the Pilot Street site but was made bankrupt in 1875.
