Shipbuilder: Simon Temple (Snr & Jnr), South Shields (1780 - 1805)

Shipbuilder: Simon Temple Jnr, Jarrow (1806 - 1813)

Shipbuilder: William Smoult Temple, Jarrow (1811 - 1812)

Simon Temple born at Crayke near Easingwold, North Yorkshire in 1728 and by 1780 he was advertising himself as a shipwright with a hull for sale at Mill Dam. In 1759, Simon Temple the Younger was born, also at Crayke. Simon Temple the Elder was declared bankrupt at South Shields in 1786. He died in 1805.

Simon Temple the Younger also became a shipbuilder and opened a yard at Thrift Street South Shields, just downstream from the current Shields Ferry landing. His eldest son William Smoult Temple also appears to have been in the business. By 1802 he was living at Hylton Castle and living in a very lavish style.

Simon Temple the Younger then branched out into colliery ownership and opened the Jarrow Colliery in 1803. Again he spent lavishly on the opening ceremony and on an assortment of civic buildings at Jarrow such as two schools and a Fever House and Hospital.

In 1805 he opened a shipyard at the West end of Jarrow Quay, the site of Palmer Bros' first yard and started building for the Admiralty. The Admiralty was desperate for shipbuilding capacity as Britain was at war with Napoleon and invasion was a major threat. His first contract was taken at a contract price of £9,398 for each of the three 6th rate frigates ordered. However he failed to meet the contract deadlines. Despite this the hard-pressed Admiralty ordered more vessels. Again Temple failed to deliver to contract and probably lost money on each of his Admiralty contracts. However the lavish lifestyle continued.

In 1806 he sold the South Shields yard and concentrated his shipbuilding efforts on the Jarrow yard. In 1810 he opened the Templetown Colliery at South Shields, but it had cost a lot more than expected to sink the shaft and bring out the first coal.

In 1811 Simon Temple the Younger was eventually declared bankrupt at South Shields and he then disappeared from public life.
